Marigold (lat. Calendula officinalis) is a healing plant, which we can find in various forms (such as tea, oil, grease). It found wide application in cosmetics, phytotherapy diseases of the digestive system, hemorrhoids, gynecological and other diseases. But we use it the most commonly for skin diseases.

You can make ointment at a simple recipe from local ingredients, without the addition of any “chemistry”.

Recipe for homemade marigold ointment

For homemade marigold ointment, you need only 50 fresh marigold flowers and 5 tablespoons of homemade lard (that has to be washed). You can use any lard you have (pork, goose…)

Preparation: Put the lard in a bowl and cover with a little hot water. Then whisk it using electric mixer, and the rest water spill. Repeat this procedure several times until the lard is white all the way, so it looks like cream.

Put lard into pan and heat over low heat until is melted and heated to the boiling point. Rend marigold petals and mix them in hot lard until they wilt. Leave it until it is completely cool (best to spend the night). Re-warm, just to melt the mixture completely, strain through cheesecloth into a jar. When the ointment has cooled, seal the jars and store in a cool place, preferably in the refrigerator.

How to collect the flowers

The flowers are carriers of healing substances, so you should pick only them. You will pick the flowers in the sun when they are open. For making the ointment, use fresh flowers. For tea, you should dry the flowers, short, on high temperature. Then pack in linen bags and store until use. For marigold oil are necessary fresh plants, also.

What are the benefits of marigold ointment?

Ointment is suitable for the treatment of all skin diseases: eczema, impetigo, psoriasis, seborrhea, acne… But also is good for skin infections caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. Even with the damage and skin injuries: cuts, scratches, burns, wounds… Particularly effective for wound that doesn’t heal and can be treated; for fresh scars, then bites and insect bites.

You can use it in varicose veins, usually the lower leg veins. Also for open wounds created as a result of venous leg weakness. Ointment is very effective for hemorrhoids.

It  often using in cosmetics and it reducing pores and removing blackheads. Ointment reduces the appearance of purulent acne, removes stains on the skin and reduces the visibility of scars. It softens skin thickening – hyperkeratosis and blisters.

How to use

You can use marigold ointment in the usual way, if you nourish healthy skin. When you are applying to the face is desirable to before-clean and moisten the skin. Thus, apply a thin layer of ointment, enough for skin care.

For ulcers and wounds, blisters and callus, you should liquor marigold ointment on the cheesecloth in a thicker layer. Then press the gauze on the wound and fasten a bandage or sticking plaster. In this way, nutrients from the ointment penetrate deeper into the skin and accelerate healing.

In the treatment of dry and cracked areas of the skin after application of ointment, you can cover with plastic bags or wrap, for more efficient softening of these areas.

For curing hemorrhoids, lubricate the thick layer around the anus several times a day, after cleaning of the entire area.


  1. Ointment doesn’t have unpleasant odor, but you can put in it a few drops of essential oil if desired.
  2. To save ointment choose glass jars before plastic. You can use old glass bottles of cream or plain jars.
  3. Ointment has an intense yellow color and stains your clothes. You should protect the lubricated area with gauze or cotton cloth, daily sanitary pad if used in the genital area or socks if it lubricates the feet.
  4. The effect is better if you cover a layer of ointment on the skin with foil or plastic bags.


  • Marigold and surrounding plants in the garden do not spray if it will be used as a harmless plant.
  • If you have an allergic reaction to grass pollen you should check whether you corresponded marigold ointment, applying it to the forearm.
  • Ointment has a long shelf life if stored in the refrigerator. It mustn’t be warm, it will quickly become rancid.
