Cartilage is the connective tissue of the joints of arms and legs, but there is also in the nose, ear shells, thorax, vertebrae and airways. It is flexible and facilitates overcoming the pressure and prevents friction occurring during movements of the bone.
When the knee is concerned, after a number of years, the cartilage begins to waste. Obesity, physical inactivity, too fast pace of life, sitting at work, stress and injuries accelerate this process. The disease is otherwise called gonarthrosis, as derived from the Greek word ‘gony’, meaning knee.
Symptoms of gonarthrosis
The main symptoms of gonarthrosis are pain (usually at the beginning of the movement and during the climb/descent up/down stairs), swelling, feeling of warmth, stiffness, reduced mobility of knees, creaking of knees and knocking of the knees.
What do you do first if your cartilage is damaged?
First and foremost, if you are overweight, lose weight! Reduce the weight your knees are carrying and facilitate their functioning. Also, exercise – bike, walk, yoga, but do not run, play tennis and football, because these sports are invasive for knees. Avoid coldness, stress and wear comfortable shoes. At home, walk barefoot if you do not feel the coldness. Also, eat the foods that favor the renewal of the knee cartilage.
Renewal of knee cartilage by nutrition
In order to restore the cartilage of the knee, we recommend diet similar to the Mediterranean. In fact, that is the food rich in amino acids – olive oil, fish, fruit; chondroitin – crabs and lobsters; vitamin C – oranges, mandarins, lemon, grapes, blueberries, lettuce, onion; Vitamin E – spinach, almonds, walnuts, avocados and natural oils; beta carotene – carrots and lysine, ingredient of cheese, eggs, salt, beans and dried fruit; Vitamin D – bread, milk, cereals, fatty fish, oyster; Vitamin A – liver, kidney, dairy products, eggs, cod, sweet peppers, melons, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, apricots, grapefruit and green vegetables.
Do not consume too much coffee, meat and alcohol, as they create excess acid in the body. Building-up of acid in the body leads to inflammation of the joints.
